Success! Over the past few days, I have been pondering what to do with my poor computer. As I stated in my previous post, my computer went belly up and I couldn't tell for sure what exactly was wrong with it. I had my suspicions that my graphics card went south on me. At the time I built the machine, the card (GeForce 8800 GTX) cost me around $450 dollars. Buying another card without being certain that it was the problem was a gamble. So I started shopping around.
I priced out some new computers as I didn't really feel like building another one. No matter how hard I tried, the machine, with the specs I wanted was going to run me around $2,000 to $2,500 dollars. It's something that I want to do but not right now.
I decided to take the gamble and buy another video card. The GeForce 8800 GTX is no longer in production but after a bit of research, I found out the that GeForce GTS 250 is essentially the exact same card (but a little better!) and the best news of the day? It was only $150 bucks! Yes, there are a plethora of better cards out there but the GTS 250 will do what I need it to do.
For now...
Mainly, I only need it to play the World of Warcraft as that ALL this machine does. Surfing the web is off limits on this machine! After getting hacked and having all of my gear, items and character's stolen, I'm a bit skiddish on what I do with this computer. But I digress...
I brought home the graphics card, cracked the case, pulled the old one and slapped in the nice new shiny one. After doing some routine maintenance (Dustbunny duty) I fired her up.
Tada!! Everything was perfect! My gamble paid off! I'm extremely happy to say the least, I wasn't looking forward to shelling out thousands for a machine that I will most likely be replacing sometime next year.
Well, I'm off to play World of Warcraft! Yay Me!
